Behavioral Tools for RTI Tier I (Classroom) Interventions: Strategies for Teachers

Students who start to show behavior problems in the classroom are often able to correct those behaviors when the teacher responds proactively with practical classroom management strategies. This full-day workshop presents a series of research-based group and individual behavioral intervention ideas that teachers can use independently (at the ‘Tier I’ RTI level) to manage common problem student behaviors before they spiral out of control. Intervention strategies include tips for classwide behavioral management, ‘best practices’ in the use of reinforcers (rewards), and individual student behavioral contracts. Participants will also learn convenient techniques to document their use of behavioral strategies and to monitor student behavioral improvements. Ideas discussed in the training will be tied to the multi-tier ‘Response to Intervention’ problem-solving framework now in wide use in schools across the nation.

Behavioral Tools for RTI Tier III (Intensive) Interventions: Functional Behavioral Assessments & Behavior Intervention Plans

Students who display severe problem behaviors in the classroom are at a very high risk for school failure. This full-day workshop will train educators in the use of Tier III (intensive) tools for conducting a school-based Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) and for using the resulting information to construct a comprehensive Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). Participants will be introduced to techniques for the direct observation of student behavior (e.g., frequency recording, interval recording, and time-sampling procedures; teacher behavioral logs and scatterplots), as well as methods for the indirect recording of behavior (e.g., teacher and parent interviews, Daily Behavior Report Cards, student self-monitoring). Guidelines will also be presented for using FBA results to build an intervention plan that is research-based and that targets the identified function(s) contributing to the student’s problem behaviors. All assessment and intervention strategies discussed in the training will be tied to the multi-tier ‘Response to Intervention’ problem-solving framework now in wide use in schools across the nation.
