Books That Make A Positive Difference - Bibliotherapy in Action

In order to teach a child, you must enter their view of the world – Julia Cook

Come and explore the hilarious, "hands on" books by Julia Cook. Learn how to effectively tackle problems like tattling, interrupting, injury prevention, personal space, personal safety and even nose picking!!! As a former teacher and guidance counselor, Julia writes practical, easy to use stories that not only make a positive difference, but are fun to read. Julia will demonstrate how to use her books effectively through student involvement and interaction.

Julia Cook is a former teacher and school guidance counselor with a Master’s Degree in Elementary School Counseling. Her children’s books, presented through the world-view of a child, are geared toward making a positive difference in the lives of all who read them. Some of her titles include: My Mouth Is A Volcano, A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue, Personal Space Camp, My Mom Thinks She’s My Volleyball Coach….But She’s Not, Scoop, I Am A Booger, Treat Me With Respect!, The Bubble Wrap Queen, It’s Hard to Be a Verb!, Melvin the Magnificent Molar, and Bully Beans.

What others are saying about Julia Cook’s workshops:

"You are so creative! As a counselor I know how much more the children grasp when they learn it through a story."

"All of Julia’s books are fabulous to read in the classroom. They integrate well with the Second Step Curriculum and not only have great illustrations, but Lewis is a riot!"

"I have been a school social worker for many years. I have spent lots of money but rarely have I found books and resources that are as relevant as yours. Reading the stories is pure fun and I know the kids are having a great time listening. More than that, the kids get them! When I ask what did you learn, what was the message, what will you use they can give me answers. Thanks so much for this resource."

Friday AM Keynote
Examining 30 Years of Collecting "Pearls"

Pearls are small, often rare, valauable objects developed over time from grit. If each pearl represents one year of the Annual Conference on Emotional Disabilities, what does the strand of 30 pearls represent? Dr. Jackson will reflect upon the stories and wisdom from 30 years and how they prepare us for the future.

Dr. Jackson is currently a behavioral specialist with Indianapolis Public Schools where she supports services for students with emotional disabilities and is the district trainer for positive behavior supports.  Her career in special education includes work at a psychiatric hospital to the  Indiana Department of Education. Cindy was one of the founders of CCBD in Indiana and the statewide conference for supporting teachers of students with emotional disabilities.  A long time CEC member and advocate for children.

WORKSHOPS (check back for additions)

In addition to our featured sessions, we have a variety of breakout sessions scheduled:

When Love Doesn't Conquer All

James Kling

This interactive training will provide effective, concrete techniques for all levels of professionals working with children and adolescents that exhibit moderate to severe behavior problems. The participants will have an understanding how parents with children/adolescents that have behavior problems are living in domestic violent homes (children abusing family). This upside down Domestic Violence situation provides little empathy and direction from communities since we are trained to see only the children (and battered wives) as victims. The material is appropriate for all levels.
