"Practical Tools for Meeting the Needs of Students with Challenging Behaviors"

Thursday, August 5

FBA/RTI - Tools to Teach Pro-social Skills: Foundations for Beginning Activities & Reasonable Teaching of Interventions for Students to Learn Prosocial Skills

This workshop will provide specific examples of writing and using meaningful FBA’s in the context of RTI. Use of FBA’s has been widely implemented in schools since IDEA ’98; however, practitioners continue to struggle with how to make them meaningful and effective. Participants will learn best practice tools for improving teaching practice from the assessment report to the implementation of behavior improvement plans and to student progress monitoring. Specific topics will include:

  • Distinguishing between minimal legal standards and optimal teaching practice;

  • Defining and determining what is “meaningful”;

  • Using FBA’s/RTI in practical, meaningful ways;

  • Implementing positive behavior support plans to improve skills within the 3-tiered framework; and

  • Monitoring and measuring student progress.

Beth Baker, Nancy Busse & Barbara Mackey

Barbara Mackey has a Master's Degree in Special Education and has been teaching students with emotional and behavior challenges for 11 years. Currently, she teaches the Success Program in Grand Rapids and works with challenging youth that have been removed from six different school districts.
