Summer Institute for Working with Students with Challenging Behaviors

The Minnesota Institute for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (MIEBD) presents Summer Institute 2008. The Summer Institute is part of a Minnesota initiative to provide quality training and support to professionals who work with students with challenging behaviors. The Institute is recommended for practitioners working toward EBD licensure and veteran personnel who would like professional growth opportunities, graduate elective credits and continuing education credits.

The Summer EBD Institute has been designed to:

  • Offer four 3-credit graduate-level courses (Characteristics of EBD, Behavior Management, two Advanced Seminars) during two 5-day sessions

  • Provide learning experiences that enrich campus course curricula

  • Use a group context that facilitates a sense of "belonging" and a state-wide support network

  • Include opportunities for participation and collaboration among faculty of participating universities

Course Requirements for University Credit

All summer class sessions (five days) are required. Coursework will continue through the fall semester and grades will be issued in December (Note: U of M Duluth SpED 5382 is for Spring 09 registration). Participants should expect graduate-level courses and assignments. Textbook information will be provided with registration confirmation.

All attendees must register for three or six semester credits OR elect to audit any of the classes and obtain CEU clock hours. Students will be responsible for registering and paying tuition through their selected university. University of St. Thomas students will register and pay FULL tuition on the first day of class. All other students should contact their school’s registrar for fees, due dates and questions. In addition, there is a $30 non-refundable registration fee per course (payable to B.I.C.A.).

Timing & Location

Classes will run from 8 am - 5 pm each day. All classes and activities will be held at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Minneapolis. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided each day.

The Institute is coordinated by the Behavioral Institute for Children & Adolescents (BICA) and it is part of MIEBD, a multi-agency institute established by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) to provide a full continuum of support to new and continuing teachers of students with EBD. This initiative was made possible through a grant from MDE from the federal award, Special Education-State Personnel Development Grant of P.L. 108-466 IDEA and CFDA 84.323A.
